For a good while now I have been captivated by Japanese art, especially the block prints of the 18th and 19th centuries. One of my favourite books in my collection is of fabric designs for kimono. These were the influences for this limited release of art, fashion and decor items in this exclusive one off pop up. Original art, limited edition prints, papier mache, leggings, tops scarves, totes, clutch pouches, cushions, mugs, tea towels, rugs and greetings cards.

I believe that life benefits from colour and this pop up has that in abundance.

Christine Appleby - Periderm: Perceptions of the Tree Surface

  • The Corner Store Gallery (map)

Christine Appleby is a recent first-class honour graduate from the ANU school of Art and Design. Her practice evokes the colour, line, shape and texture found in natural settings. She is captivated by the inventive process and infinite possibilities of weaving. She uses her chosen media, weaving, to demonstrate the rhythms and transience of nature.

While there is predictability to the natural environment, her work reveals a randomness, an unsophisticated organisation and a degree of ambiguity. The memory and essence of her experience captured in her imagination and her responses evokes those experiences in visual form. She focuses on ideas of inconsistency, imperfection and irregularity, capturing the ephemeral qualities of the natural world.

When I started this series in 2017 my focus was the muted beauty of the Darling Barka.  The often sombre colours, the slope of banks and the light at different times of day. Since September 2018 when Four Corners exposed corruption, water theft, and an avalanche of media attention - these escalating conflicts have seeped into my images. A shift in colour intensity and thickness of paint -  a reflection on the strength of connections to this river system for myself and many others in awe of its presence.

The Light is Different Here - Madeline Young

  • The Corner Store Gallery (map)

Madeline Young’s abstract compositions are inspired by the unique beauty of the Australian bush; the way dappled sunlight filters through the canopy, casting long rays of light and shadow and the distinctive blue-green of Eucalyptus leaves filling the air with their familiar scent. Madeline simplifies and exaggerates the shapes she finds in nature and uses blocks of colour to create works that, like the Australian bush, are simultaneously vibrant and serene.
