Jessica Olpp is a Melbourne-based visual artist whose work reflects a quiet lyricism and deep appreciation for stillness. Raised among the bushlands of Warrandyte and having lived and worked in France, Jessica brings an introspective and poetic quality to her paintings. A lifelong creative, she began painting as a meditative balance to her career as a French teacher. Her background in classical dance, poetry, and foreign languages informs her visual art practice, which is rich in emotional nuance, atmosphere, and a sense of calm.
A gentle moodiness characterises Jessica’s paintings which are typically inspired by the French and Australian countryside and simple domestic vignettes. Knowing when to stop painting usually comes intuitively; she would rather say less than too much in a piece, prioritising atmosphere over specific detail. Her work has been described as serene, evocative and nostalgic; indeed, her paintings are an extension of a certain feeling when holding a paintbrush as years of observation of beautiful things and places rise from the subconscious.
