Growing up on a farm in the north west slopes of New South Wales, Gavin put pen to paper from an early age. The vast sloping country dotted with old tractors and sprawling power lines were an endless source of inspiration and drawing became a major aspect of his childhood. As he grew up, his technical skills never really took off, and his visual style has remained childlike and low-brow. Creatures making absurd and often humdrum statements has become a motif in Gavin's work, and he has always favoured expression and spontaneity over technical skill. When not painting he is either skateboarding or making absurd films.
