Chris de Hoog

Layered, expressive abstract paintings inspired by nature and memory

  • Chris de Hoog is an Australian contemporary artist based on Wadawurrung Country (Geelong, Victoria). His layered, expressive paintings draw on nature, memory, and colour, shaped by an intuitive process that allows each work to evolve organically on the canvas. With a background in graphic design, Chris brings a strong sense of composition and visual rhythm to his practice, a foundation that supported the success of his first solo exhibition.

Beginning many of his paintings with leftover marks and accidental colour, Chris builds rich textures and unexpected details that celebrate imperfection. He rarely works from photographs, instead responding directly to gesture, emotion, and materiality. The result is a body of abstract paintings that balance what is revealed and what is concealed—inviting viewers into a quiet, atmospheric space between landscape and memory.
