Secret Garden brings together original paintings and ceramics by Pia Kuykhoven and Phoebe Turner in a celebration of colour, flowers and the enchanting details of the natural world.
Filled with imagination, playful forms and rich colour, the exhibition invites us into a world of gardens, blooms and wild, hidden corners. Across painting and ceramic works, Pia and Phoebe each bring their own distinctive way of seeing nature, creating a collection that feels joyful, curious and a little bit magical.
Pia Kuykhoven
Pia Kuykhoven is a contemporary Australian artist based in Adelaide, South Australia. Working full-time from her backyard studio, surrounded by a flourishing garden, she creates vibrant floral still life paintings that explore memory, home and our connection to the natural world.
Originally trained as a landscape designer, Pia's deep relationship with gardens traces back to childhood and continues to shape her creative practice today. Her paintings are rich with colour, texture and personal history, often featuring flowers from her garden alongside heirloom teacups, platters and collected vessels that act as carriers of story and connection.
Through intuitive layers of mark-making, Pia builds expressive paintings that mirror the rhythms of gardening - adding, refining and allowing each work to evolve over time. Bold, bright and highly tactile, her paintings celebrate the comfort, beauty and quiet drama of everyday life, inviting viewers to see them not only as artworks but as future heirlooms that hold memories for generations to come.
Phoebe Turner
Phoebe Turner is a ceramic artist based on the far-south coast of NSW, whose practice explores memory, material, and the natural world. Raised by a potter, Phoebe’s earliest experiences with clay, raku firings in a makeshift kiln and time spent at her father’s side, instilled a deep connection to the tactile, meditative nature of making.
Although she has pursued ceramics seriously only in recent years, clay has become central to her daily life. Her practice is intuitive and experimental: she often begins with a simple pinch pot and allows the material and her hands to guide the form. Glazes, slips, and oxides are layered with curiosity and care, with final firings revealing surfaces rich in texture, color, and depth.
Nature is a constant source of inspiration. Walks along rockpools, encounters with fungi, and the subtle patterns of the landscape inform both the shapes and surfaces of her work. Each vessel is autobiographical, carrying traces of time, place, and personal history, while also celebrating the quiet joy of making and the poetry found in everyday materials.
