Jo Fernandez is a landscape artist living on the outskirts of the historic village of Millthorpe, in the NSW Central Tablelands. Her work draws deep inspiration from the region’s expansive skies, open land, and the shifting light and colour brought by its distinct seasons. Rooted in a landscape that is personal and close to home, Jo’s paintings begin with an emotional response to her surroundings. She seeks out elements that resonate deeply, using colour, tone, and atmosphere to distil their essence. Her technique of glazing—applying transparent layers of oil paint—brings a luminous depth to her works.
Since being selected as a finalist in the Landscape Group Exhibition in 2019, Jo has exhibited regularly with The Corner Store Gallery and has been a finalist in the Mini Series, Inside This Box, Regional Landscape, and the Calleen Art Prize.
Jo continues to explore her fascination with clouds in her latest body of work, Silver Linings. These cloudscapes reflect the fleeting nature of life, while also serving as a metaphor for optimism—reminding us that even in difficult times, there is often a positive side, if we choose to see it. In several works, the inclusion of bare trees introduces a quiet, symbolic motif; their stark silhouettes evoke a sense of stillness and peace.

Clouds are an ongoing source of fascination for the artist. Ephemeral and fleeting, their continuous state of reconfiguration reminds us that change is the only constant in life. For the artist, gazing at clouds moves her from the recognisable to the abstract. Working with oil paint she captures the variations in colour, shape, movement and texture.
In Cloud Dance, Jo presents a joyous, carefree and enchanted state of weightlessness and freedom, in an otherwise chaotic world. As always, Jo’s work invites us to pause, reflect, and find solace in the beauty that surrounds us.
Jo has exhibited with The Corner Store Gallery since selected as a finalist in the Landscape Group Exhibition in 2019, and has been a finalist in the Mini Series, Inside This Box, and Regional Landscape Prizes.
