Mischievous is a playful body of work by Bathurst-based artist Yani Lenehan, celebrating the cheeky personality of the Australian magpie. These artworks present magpies not just as native birds, but as lively characters - curious, confident and full of attitude.
Familiar figures in everyday Australian life, magpies are known for their watchful presence, distinctive calls and occasional mischief. Friendly yet bold, they engage with us as much as we observe them, bringing humour and connection to the natural world.
Working primarily in oils, Lenehan begins with a detailed drawing and carefully builds layers of colour and tone to create stylised contemporary paintings. Her work is driven by a passion for colour, an interest in light, and a calm, considered process that results in bright, warm and joyful artworks.
