Contact us about personal payment plans and Layby.
Claire Lai has almost always lived in Southeast Queensland. The diverse environments of inner city, rainforest, rural and coastal have been a source of finding detail and wonder in the natural and suggestions of narrative and identity within the urban. Close observation has been a preoccupation and pleasure throughout her life. Expressing this through her life-long obsession with art and colour ties her many different interests together.
Claire utilises techniques of modernism and realism to capture the beauty and detail in transitory subjects. She works mainly in oil paint and soft pastels, and her current themes are florals, still-life, portraits, figurative and interiors.
While playing at friend’s tomato farms as a child Claire has distinct memories of seeking out misshapen improbable tomatoes as objects of beauty. Later in life heritage tomato varieties came as a revelation. On mass they promise a big family meal with lots of cheerful colourful relatives, individually they are each as much a decorative orb as a flavoursome treat. She never hides them in the fridge but displays them in the kitchen where their unique perfection can be enjoyed.
