Pippita Bennett and Julie Paterson are two artists from the Blue Mountains, creating new textile-based work, rooted in the true spirit of collaboration.
They use native and exotic flora as their starting point - plants often found in their gardens or surrounding environments. Pippita works with plant-based dyeing and stitching. Julie uses drawing and stencil-printing. Together, they work into and onto the fabric, building layers under and over as they go.
Pip and Julie work on multiple pieces at once, immersing themselves and their studio environments in the unfinished work, passing each piece back and forth to each other many times, discussing and responding to each others’ marks, textures and layers. The works develop slowly, unpredictably and often circuitously, finally emerging as finished pieces when they both are in agreement. The process is long and thoughtful and full of uncertainty. The results are layered, meaningful and considered.
Pip and Julie’s collaboration began mid-2025, when Pip’s husband died and Julie’s mother became gravely ill. The work they are creating together has been and continues to be particularly significant for both artists, marking a time of reflection, loss and great care.
