Natalie Martin is an artist based on Wadawurrung Country on Victoria’s Surf Coast. Working primarily in vibrant watercolour, her practice is driven by a deep, physical connection to the landscapes she moves through. Walking, noticing, returning again and again. Native trees and flowers are central to her work, not as static subjects, but as energetic, living presences shaped by wind, light and time.
Her current body of work explores trees as sources of both strength and momentum. There is a hum to them, a quiet intensity that can be felt when you slow down enough to tune in. Through bold colour, layered washes and expressive mark-making, Natalie responds intuitively to this energy, allowing the work to shift, flow and build. The paintings sit somewhere between observation and sensation, capturing not just form, but movement, rhythm and feeling.
‘Presence’ explores light playing through the leaves of a eucalypt, captured through shifts of colour and movement. The work reflects the experience of being in the bush, how it can feel both steadying and energising at once, drawing your attention fully into what’s in front of you. ‘Presence’ invites the viewer into the vitality of the landscape.
