“My practice is grounded in lived experience of this country rather than strict imagery. I’m interested in how distance operates here — physical, emotional, and cultural — and how light and colour stretch across that space. In Between the Distance, colour becomes a quiet disruption: unusual, striking, and deliberate. It suggests memory, weather, and time passing, rather than place as a fixed identity.”
Stu Doherty Originally trained at the National Art School and built a successful multi decade career in fashion design, teaching at the Whitehouse Institute of Design and designing menswear for leading Australian labels and department stores before turning full-time to painting in 2020.
He paints from his studio on the Mid North Coast of NSW.
He has exhibited widely across regional Australia and has been a finalist in many national competitions including the Elaine Bermingham National Watercolour Prize, Lethbridge Landscape Prize, The John Villiers Outback Landscape Prize and recently had his first solo show at The Corner Store Gallery in Orange.
