Tara Axford is an Australian mixed media artist working with print, collage, fibre, photography and painting. Her work begins with places, sites visited, longed for, rebuilt through memory, pattern and colour. Drawn to the natural world and the quiet mystery it holds, she notices textures, imperfections and the weathered or discarded: a spotted log, a washed-out creek line, a shift in light across scrub and sky. Tara often “zooms in” on an environment, abstracting what she sees into simplified forms that invite the viewer to look again.
Her current practice explores the meeting point between 2D and 3D, combining tactile surfaces with assembled elements and traces of human life alongside nature’s presence. She is interested in opposites, busy and calm, messy and ordered, disruption and serenity, and in how a landscape can be reimagined into a new visual language. Grounded in an appreciation of the environment, Tara hopes that close attention to nature’s detail and beauty can subtly shift how we value and care for it.
