Jason McDonald enjoyed a successful career in Sydney as an award-winning graphic designer before returning to the family farm in Hargraves near Mudgee where he grew up surrounded by nature. It was here in 2015, McDonald established his accommodation business the highly regarded Permanent Camping Eco Retreat, while also following new directions in his creative pursuits.
A modern blend of photography and digital design this body of work is composed entirely from Jason’s photographic expeditions at the 'Permanent Camping' property. His beloved connection to the land and exquisite eye for detail captures the underlying relationships between plant, insect and animal in this unique ecosystem. Contrasting the fragile and rugged elements of this natural environment provides the viewer with a naturalist perspective of these mostly hidden life cycles and lets them enjoy a child like wonder by making their own discovery within the illustrations. Cocooned in box frames, the repetitive images feel like natural history specimen trays and precisely illustrate the perfect circle of life.

Jason McDonald enjoyed a successful career in Sydney as an award-winning graphic designer before returning to the family farm near Mudgee where he grew up surrounded by nature. His absolute affinity with the bush shines through all his art practice and has won him much critical acclaim. Capturing the minute detail of plants and creatures through the eye of the lens, McDonald truly accentuates beauty in a micro world.
In this collection The Roo, The Magpie & Friends, Jason presents a delightful portrait series of his orphan animals - Loppy the kangaroo, Squeaker the magpie, Holly the honeyeater and Little Pipit. All rescued on the farm, they soon ingratiated into both home and heart providing pure talent for a quick photographer. We follow their free for all amongst the memorabilia of the lovingly restored Shearer’s Cottage Jason calls home. The stylised monochromatic compositions contrasted with colourful vintage objects and fresh cut flowers from his garden lead us to examine nostalgic notions of childhood, memory, colour and play.
