Jo Dunsmuir is an Australian painter whose practice spans both still life and landscape painting. Working primarily in oils, she creates richly textured artworks that draw inspiration from her home, garden and the coastal environment of regional Victoria.
A lifelong love of drawing eventually led Jo back to art after studying Interior Decoration as an adult. Largely self-taught, she explored a variety of mediums before discovering oil paint, which became the foundation of her current practice.
Jo lives in a small township along Victoria's Great Ocean Road, where the changing landscape, seasonal gardens and everyday objects around her provide a constant source of inspiration. Flowers from her garden, collected vessels, fruit and domestic objects frequently appear in her still life paintings, while the surrounding coastline and countryside inform her landscape work.
Her background in design is reflected in her strong sense of composition and colour, with each painting carefully balanced while retaining a painterly, expressive quality. Whether working in still life or landscape, Jo is interested in creating artworks that feel generous, engaging and full of character.
Since 2021, Jo has exhibited regularly in group exhibitions and has been selected as a finalist in several national art prizes, including exhibitions hosted by The Corner Store Gallery, the Lethbridge 20,000 Art Award and the Waverley Woollahra 9x5 Landscape Prize. Her paintings are held in private collections throughout Australia and internationally.
