Deb is an artist from Geelong, Victoria. After studying a Bachelor of Fine Art at Deakin University Deb also completed a Post Graduate degree and works as a full time art educator. Working predominantly in oils, she chooses to capture images mostly derived and inspired from found objects and fauna and flora from the natural environment and spent her childhood exploring the rugged untamed coastline along the Great Ocean Road near Peterborough in Victoria.
The ordinary and often overlooked treasures are given a sense of permanence in her work. There is often a story or narrative within the works as each object has a provenance, purpose or historical importance. Deb has exhibited at The Geelong Gallery, The Warrnambool Gallery, as well at Boom (Geelong), Brickworks (Castlemaine) and Tussock (Point Lonsdale). Deb has works in private collections in Australia and New Zealand.
In this series of three oil painting sketches, I explore the quiet character and enduring presence of old chairs - each one discovered in flea markets and second-hand auctions, and each bearing traces of its former life. These chairs, repainted and much loved over the years, carry more than physical wear; they hold stories, memories, and moments that whisper through worn paint and softened edges.
I am drawn to objects that might otherwise be dismissed or forgotten. The ordinary becomes extraordinary when viewed through a lens of care and attention. These chairs, with their subtle curves, fading colours, and deep shadows, become stand-ins for people and time passed. The shadows suggest both presence and absence - a stillness that invites contemplation.
Painting in oils allows me to dwell in the surface and texture of each object, building layers that reflect the life embedded within them. The slow, deliberate process mirrors the passage of time that each chair has witnessed.
As with much of my work, there is a narrative embedded here - one that honours the provenance of these found objects and seeks to give them a new kind of permanence. These chairs have served their purpose, perhaps many times over, and yet still remain - resilient, familiar, and quietly beautiful.
