Eira Chidgey is a UK born artist based in Newcastle NSW, she holds a first class honours degree in Contemporary Applied Arts from Trinity St David University and exhibits regularly around Australia. In 2024 Eira enjoyed two solo exhibitions ‘A Place For All The Small Things’ at Leda Gallery and ‘All Roads Lead Home’ at Pseudonym Gallery NSW. Other achievements include being selected as a finalist in The Hunter Emerging Art Prize 2025, The 50x50 Art Prize 2025 at Brunswick Street Gallery, The Newcastle Club Foundation Art Prize 2024, The Leda Art Prize 2024, and The Small Works Art Prize 2025 at Brunswick Street Gallery. Her work sells regularly with Artbid Australia.
Eira Chidgey is a mixed media abstract artist responding in an instinctive way to the world around her and daily domestic life. A background in textile design and a first class honours degree in Contemporary Applied Arts have created a love of texture and pattern resulting in multi layered surfaces.
My painting practice is storytelling, communicating what touches me, it explores relationships, memory, moments with my children, music that moves me, and how ultimately these shared human experiences connect us to one another.
These three artworks; When All The Stars Shine Just For You, Moving With The Times Is Overrated, and Some Other Kind Of Magic, are a response to moments of family life, and emotions surrounding the privilege of growing older. Colour and shape are built meditatively and intuitively, mark making is dynamic and playful creating movement and freedom within the work. Quick decisive brush strokes are juxtaposed with softer suggestions of line, whispers of feeling, furrows in the paint. “I am here and it is enough.”
