Rachel Lucas is an Australian ceramic artist working in stoneware and porcelain. After a career in science and business, and many years raising her family, she formally began her ceramics training at the National Art School, Darlinghurst in 2019. She now exhibits regularly and has been recognised in major art prizes across Australia.
Her practice explores themes of landscape, endurance and the passage of time. Working with both wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques, Rachel creates sculptural ceramic forms that respond to the textures and rhythms of the natural world. Clay, for her, is a living material that carries both history and possibility. Its strength and vulnerability mirror the Australian landscape and the human condition.
Her Riverbed series reflects the elemental origins of clay, drawing on ancient ceramic traditions and the raw beauty of parched land. In contrast, her Mortals series considers ageing, loss and resilience. Created in part as a tribute to a friend lost during Covid, these works explore the balance between strength and fragility, presence and absence. Across her practice, Rachel’s contemporary ceramic sculptures speak to endurance. Though time alters all things, her work suggests that grace and spirit remain.
