Samantha Mackie, Fibro Optimism - Great Australian Dream, 2026

Porcelain, 34h x 27w x 2 (set of three), wall hung

Sam Mackie is a Sydney-based ceramic artist creating unglazed porcelain works from her studio in Avalon, on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Originally working with paper, she was drawn to the durability & permanence of ceramics & completed a Diploma of Ceramics in 2024.

Using delicate porcelain slabs built through hundreds of brushstrokes, Sam creates linear forms that reduce landscapes, structures & familiar objects to their most distilled form. Left unglazed & free of colour, the work is quiet - almost ghostly - with light moving through the fine porcelain to mark the slow cadence of passing time.

Her practice centres on memory, place & the significance of everyday objects: the house as an archetype of shelter & belonging, and objects as containers for memory. Can an object hold memory? Can making become an act of remembering? She often reflects on whether her fascination with houses stems from her father, a bricklayer, and the school holidays she spent watching him transform simple materials into enduring structures.
