Nicholas Aplin (b. Sydney, Australia) is a Melbourne-based artist working across painting, installation, and sculpture. His practice examines the collision between built environments and the natural world, reflecting on the quiet tensions embedded in Australia’s suburban and public landscapes. 

Aplin has held solo exhibitions at Off the Kerb Gallery, Melbourne, including Nothing But (2024) and Towering (2021). He has exhibited nationally in group shows at No Vacancy Gallery, Wagner Contemporary, and Michael Reid Northern Beaches, and has been a finalist in the Hawkesbury Art Prize (2023), R.M. McGivern Art Prize (2019), and Adelaide Parklands Art Prize (2025). His work is held in the Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE Collection, alongside private collections in Australia, London, Los Angeles, and Vancouver.

Alongside his visual arts practice, Aplin has worked extensively in film and television as a production designer and prop maker, with credits including the ARIA-nominated music video Geronimo and the Emmy Award-winning series Survivor. He holds a Diploma of Fine Arts from the Northern Institute of TAFE (Hornsby) and a Diploma of Filmmaking from the New York Film Academy.

Necessitating a slowed-down process of looking, Nicholas Aplin’s paintings rework the edges of Australia’s urban landscape through studied colour compositions, restricted palettes, and flattened perspectives. His works emerge from photographs and sketches of the inner-city, where he isolates and reframes municipal structures, residential towers, community sports grounds, public parks and road work sites. In these spaces, rigid geometries intersect with encroaching flora, exposing a quiet contradiction between architectural order and organic sprawl.

Working with a deliberately limited palette, Aplin abstracts these familiar environments into planes of saturated colour, distilling the scene into patterns and tonal shifts that heighten a sense of estrangement. Repetition becomes both a formal and conceptual device within his practice, where subjects are revisited, cropped, and reassembled across works, allowing subtle shifts in colour and composition to suggest the fragmentary nature of memory and observation.
