Pauline Bailey is a visual artist and author originally from Melbourne, now based in Gippsland, Victoria. Her work encompasses street scenes, urban and rural landscapes, shopfronts, live music venues, iconic buildings and the raw beauty of abandoned structures. Over the past eighteen years, she has presented numerous solo exhibitions across Victoria and participated in group shows interstate. Her portfolio includes private commissions, and her work has been shortlisted for major national art prizes, including the Fleurieu Art Prize (SA), Hornsby Art Prize, Paddington Art Prize (NSW), and the Flanagan Art Prize (VIC). In addition to her visual art practice, Pauline is the author of Blues Portrait Volumes 1–5, a series documenting the Australian blues music scene. Her contribution to the genre was recently recognized with the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society’s Allan Stafford Award for Services to Blues Music.
Old Cowwarr Bakery, Health Food of a Nation: Seaford, and Old House Nimmitabel are part of a painting series that explores disused, neglected, and abandoned buildings. I’m deeply intrigued by these old structures and the stories they hold - what were they like in their prime? What led to their decline? Might they one day be restored or repurposed? Though these buildings remain standing, they are slowly deteriorating, yet they continue to embody memories of the past. While their original purposes have faded, they endure as silent markers of time's passage. Through painting, I aim to preserve and honour the memory of these forgotten places.
