Penny Verdich is a contemporary artist from Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Primarily a painter of semi abstract landscapes, Penny uses saturated colour to create bold patterned paintings. Drawing and painting on location is central to her practice. This enables Penny to explore the lines, shapes and patterns of the environment and provides the foundation for work completed in her home studio. For each painting, the colour and texture of the ground guides Penny to create forms and tessellated patterns which resolve into a semi abstract landscape.
Litchfield National Park in the Northern Territory covers a vast area, home to diverse landscapes, from harsh sandstone plateaus to dramatic rock formations to verdant rainforests and magnificent waterfalls.
My series of paintings was inspired by a small and secret pocket of this glorious environment. Tolmers Creek snakes across the escarpment, pausing in pools of blue green, almost turquoise water. Ancient cycads line the path while the pink flowered Turkey Bush provides bursts of colour in this arid environment. Weeping trees overhang the creek, creating a ‘Japanese’ garden. Sitting on the wedges of red rock lining the creek and gazing upwards, sandstone blocks rest precariously, one on another, creating a jagged skyline.
The privilege of being an artist is that I can create an impression of place without removing or destroying anything. The custodians of the land, the Marranunggu, Koongurrukun, Werat, and Warray Aboriginal people have set us a high bar indeed.
