Sophie Farquhar is an abstract painter based in Noosa. Parallel to a creative career in copywriting, she’s always painted and in 2017 she studied Abstraction at the Byron School of Art. After the wakeup call of turning 40 she accelerated her painting practise and in 2024 she was a finalist in the Unearthed Art Prize with Art To Art Gallery, Melbourne. She’s exhibited in various group exhibitions in Melbourne, put on a self-managed show in Brisbane and was a finalist in the Inside The Box Art Prize at Corner Store Gallery.

Sophie aims to capture a feeling or notion in her artworks. She explores concepts around her quest to live well, the precious nature of time and domestic life. Her distinctive markings and colours are influenced by her bushland, seaside landscape. She works in acrylic, layering the canvas with loose brush marks and panels of curved colour until the right harmony is achieved.

Most of us are attempting to lead happier, healthier lives. How to make the most of our time is something I think about as I paint. This body of work explores ideas around this. Organic lines and stacked vessels of overlapping colour are perfectly imperfect. Everything is interconnected and beautifully messy. Nothing really fits neatly in a box (and nor should it). The balance tips this way and that. It’s never been more important to keep it real and be authentic. These paintings are a raw expression of that.
