Sharolyn is a Dubbo based potter, creating stoneware decorative pieces. Her interest in pottery began in the early 1990’s in Mudgee where she attended a hobby TAFE course. There was plenty of opportunities to attend workshops from many renowned potters, giving her varied techniques to build on. The Western Potters Group was formed for potters in the region, with annual exhibitions, which Sharolyn was involved in the organising and setting up of the display.
After moving to Dubbo, Sharolyn annually exhibited at the Sydney Craft Show as well as being a guest exhibitor for the Glenaeon School Art exhibition. She was represented in several galleries, with her work on sale. Pottery was put on hold from early 2005 and not rekindled until 2023 when she was approached to run pottery workshops at the local Cultural Centre. Since then regular handbuilding and wheel throwing workshops have been held. This inspired her to explore the art once again.
Sharolyn’s work is typically influenced by Art Nouveau style with flowing lines being achieved via the use of muslin fabric and delicate piercing. Recently Sharolyn was asked to commission a piece for the Dubbo Sister City – Wujiang’s 30th anniversary gift. A set of two interlocking tea bowls were decorated with images of each region and presented in a timber box. Sharolyn continues to develop her style, including using more underglaze colour techniques, incorporating them with the style particular to her work.
These 3 works are themed by subtle colour inclusions using body stains and the beauty of the raw clay without the need of a glaze. I work with stoneware clay as my personal material of choice. Each piece has been pierced with several different sized drill bits to enhance the flow of the design. The burr is deliberately left on to add texture to the piece. I am very much influenced by the flowing lines of Art Nouveau and envisage this when draping dipped muslin fabric or cutting voids out of the piece. When designing with holes, I am thinking of how water would flow or drip. The inclusion of a bit of a twist to the stopper is to appease people's curiosity when they lift it.
