Sara Gonzalez’s practice is deeply rooted in the tradition of wood-fired ceramics. Drawing on a rich cultural heritage, with parents born in Argentina and Portugal, she brings a sensitivity to tradition, materiality, and storytelling. Her aesthetic merges raw, unglazed surfaces with minimalist, refined forms, creating vessels that are both functional and sculptural. She collaborates with flame, ash, and atmosphere to produce unrepeatable surfaces, inviting contemplation through the unpredictability and beauty of Anagama wood firing.
Community and collaboration are central to Gonzalez’s practice. Firing alongside the team at Middle Pocket Pottery under the mentorship of Venessa Skye has shaped her understanding of kiln dynamics, shared labour, and the living tradition of wood firing. Through her work, Gonzalez nurtures an enduring appreciation for handmade ceramics—objects that ground, inspire, and reflect our relationship with the world.Gonzalez has exhibited in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, and her work is held in private collections across Australia.
My practice is grounded in the transformative nature of wood-fired ceramics. I am drawn to the unpredictability of flame, ash, and atmosphere, collaborating with these elements to create pieces whose surfaces can never be exactly repeated. Rooted in my Argentine and Portuguese heritage, I carry a deep respect for tradition, material, and storytelling, weaving these threads into vessels that balance utility and sculptural presence.
I am fascinated by the marks left by fire—the subtle gradients, flashing, and deposits that record a dialogue between clay and kiln. Working with the team at Middle Pocket Pottery has deepened my understanding of the communal spirit inherent in wood firing: the shared labour, the long hours, and the collective anticipation as the kiln cools to reveal its secrets.
Through my work, I seek to create objects that invite touch and contemplation, grounding us in the physical world while hinting at something intangible and poetic. Each piece is a record of time, place, and process—a reminder that beauty often emerges from surrendering to forces beyond our control.
