Ben Randall - If What I Was Saying Was True
Ben Randall, If What I Was Saying Was True, 2026
Oil on canvas, 95x95cm framed
Based in the Hawkesbury region, Ben Randall is an abstract artist who embraces the creative freedom of abstraction. His process is inherently physical and deliberate, grounded in foundational sketches of charcoal, pastel & pencil. Painting “alla prima” Randall achieves a fluid, interwoven finish, allowing for a rapid and dynamic application of multi-layered, gestural brushstrokes. He finds inspiration in the everyday; his garden, wildlife, song lyrics, and memories; infusing his expressive works with personal meaning. His primary goal is to foster a deep connection with the viewer, inviting them to immerse themselves in his rich textures and bold colours. He aims to leave viewers with questions rather than answers, valuing the freedom abstraction offers for personal interpretation and emotional resonance.
A truth often rises like turning on a light in the middle of the night; sudden, bright, and impossible to ignore. That moment of uncertainty can carry a weight that makes you hesitate before identifying it. This work lives in that hesitation. In the studio, I push oil until it behaves like a hidden discovery - gestures emerging, resisting, disappearing, revealing only what feels survivable. I’m drawn to the tension between what we expose and what we protect, how honesty can feel both urgent and dangerous. “If What I Was Saying Was True” sits at the edge of this revelation, offering a glimpse of something present, potent, and not entirely safe to bring into full light.
