Brooke Whelan is an emerging painter based in Beechworth, Victoria, whose work lingers in the spaces between memory and place. ‘After Three’ captures a fleeting summer moment, a woman watering her tree in the front garden, bathed in the gentle glow of late afternoon light. It was one of those rare instances when the world seemed to align: the warmth of the sun, the lush green of the garden, and the subtle play of shadows all harmonised perfectly. I was drawn to the quiet intimacy of the scene, the simple act of care, the domestic ritual made luminous by the light. Through my process, which begins with photography and translates into acrylic on canvas, I aim to preserve not just the image but the feeling of that instant: a balance of colour, light, and presence that speaks to the quiet poetry of everyday life in a country town.
