Jamie Van Emmerik is a self-taught Australian artist based in regional New South Wales. Redheads explores the beauty that can be found in the most ordinary objects. A simple matchbox is something many people would overlook, yet when viewed closely it reveals intricate textures, typography, colour, and signs of everyday use. I was drawn to this subject because I enjoy noticing the small details that often go unseen and finding interest in objects that are part of our daily lives.
By recreating the matchbox at a highly detailed scale in coloured pencil, I wanted to elevate a commonplace household item into something worthy of careful attention. The drawing invites viewers to pause, look more closely, and reconsider the value and character of the ordinary. My hope is that the artwork encourages people to see that even the simplest objects can hold unexpected beauty when we take the time to truly observe them.
