Jane Tonks - Encounter in the Mist
Jane Tonks, Encounter in the Mist, 2026
Acrylic on canvas, 43x33cm framed
Jane Tonks lives on Wiradjuri Country, Orange, Regional NSW. She attained a Diploma of Fine Arts and Printmaking Certificate from Western Institute of TAFE, Orange. Specialising in contemporary landscape painting, Jane immerses herself in nature to inform and inspire her painting practice. She has held five solo exhibitions, commissioned and participated in many group exhibitions and has received several awards. Jane’s 5th solo and most significant exhibition to date, ‘Nature I Nurture’, was shown at Orange Regional Gallery, 6 February – 29 March 2026.
“This painting is a recollection from a walk on Gaanha-bula, (Mt Canobolas), where the surrounding landscape was shrouded in a heavy cloak of mist. The Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo is my sacred bird and is a very rare sight on Gaanha-bula. On an occasion when I needed encouragement, the black cockatoo called out and flew right by me, landing in a nearby ancient eucalypt. We stopped and stared at each other for some time, absorbing the serenity that she brought to me. It was a magnificent spiritual gift.”
Jane’s art practice advocates for environmental conservation and examines existential concerns for nature. The impact and intersection of human interaction, and fragile balance between vulnerable and healthy eco-systems are issues that fuel the heart of her artistic practice. Through a sensory and experiential interpretation of landscape, the Artist hopes to ignite an emotional response, inviting the audience to experience, explore and ponder their own personal relationship with the natural world, to evoke conversations around collective conservation and ethics, and a desire to act with nurture for nature. Much of Jane’s work draws inspiration from bushwalking on Gaanha-bula (Mt. Canobolas) and surrounding Wiradjuri Country in regional NSW.
