Justine Taylor - The Lake
Justine Taylor, The Lake, 2026
Acrylic on canvas, 95x95cm, framed
Justine Taylor is a self-represented Australian painter based on the Far South Coast of New South Wales. Working primarily in acrylic, her practice explores the emotional resonance of the Australian landscape through layered, intuitive painting. Rather than documenting place literally, Taylor creates atmospheric works that balance observation with abstraction, seeking to evoke memory, stillness and the quiet narratives held within the land.
Her work has been recognised through selection as a finalist in the Pro Hart Outback Art Prize, Doyle's Art Award, and the National Emerging Art Prize, as well as inclusion in the Tattersalls Salon des Refusés. Across her practice, she is drawn to moments where light transforms familiar landscapes into something fleeting and deeply felt.
This work reflects that ongoing exploration. A brooding sky and dark reflective water establish a sense of calm and contemplation before a luminous rainbow cuts through the muted palette. More than a weather event, the rainbow becomes a symbol of transience, resilience and hope - an unexpected interruption that momentarily alters the emotional landscape.
Through expressive brushwork, layered surfaces and restrained colour, Taylor creates spaces that invite reflection rather than explanation. Her paintings deliberately leave room for ambiguity, encouraging viewers to bring their own memories and experiences to the work. By capturing the delicate relationship between atmosphere, light and emotion, she aims to reveal not only the physical landscape, but the emotional one that exists alongside it.
