Kellie De Waal - Microcosm II: Land of Dust and Light
Kellie De Waal, Microcosm II: Land of Dust and Light, 2026
Sculpture, polystyrene, acrylic, beads, MDF, 24x17x17cm
Kellie De Waal is an emerging artist based on the Mid North Coast, NSW. Her practice is based in contemporary sculpture and explores themes of nature, perspective and perception. Drawing on her love for shiny objects, Kellie uses light, colour and scale to create pieces that result in a sculptural form of pointillism, and play in the space between the macroperspective vs. microperspective.
Kellie has exhibited across NSW, twice at the Glasshouse Regional Gallery, she built a lifesize installation for the 2024 ArtWalk event, and is currently taking part in the Arts Mid North Coast Shared Practice program. Kellie undertakes her first residency at the Kamispace on the Central Coast, NSW in October which will culminate in her first solo show at the end of 2026.
She is currently continuing her work on the Microcosm series, developing large scale pieces that take inspiration from the world’s most unearthly, natural landscapes.
My practice explores nature, perspective and our sense of wonder through contemporary sculpture. I work with thousands of individually placed glass beads to create detailed landscapes, an experimental process I describe as sculptural pointillism, where small, light-catching elements come together to form larger images. Experimentation is at the heart of my practice. I rarely begin with a finished idea. Instead, my work grows through curiosity, trial and error, and a lot of repetition. Many of my sculptures began simply because I wanted to see if something was possible.
The Microcosm series began after spending time exploring the national parks and coastline around Diamond Head on the Mid North Coast of NSW. Since then, it’s grown to include extraordinary natural environments around the world, and the greater cosmos. Despite their vastly different scales, I’m inspired by how these environments still give the same sense of awe.
My sculptures are built to be appreciated in different ways. Up close, viewers discover thousands of individual beads catching the light; stepping back allows those details to tranform into complete landscapes. This relationship between the microperspective and macroperspective reflects my interest in how we perceive the world.
Through the Microcosm series, I hope to encourage people to slow down and rediscover a sense of wonder. In a world of constant distraction, it’s important to consider how we perceive what’s beyond the screen and out the front door.
