Lauren Starr, Derwent (1850), 2026
Photographic composite, archival pigment print (edition of 8), 63x60cm framed
Lauren Starr is an Australian photo-media artist based in Bendigo, Victoria. Working with staged photography and digital compositing, she creates narrative images exploring women's histories, mythology and the Australian landscape. Starr is the recipient of the 2022 Bluethumb Art Prize (Photography and Grand Prize) and has been a finalist in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize, Olive Cotton Award and Head On Photo Awards. Her work is held in the collections of Parliament House Melbourne and Bendigo Art Gallery.
My practice explores the meeting place between history, folklore and landscape through constructed photography. Drawing on family history, women's stories and imagined narratives, I create images that inhabit the space between memory and myth. Rather than reconstructing historical events, I use photography to consider what is carried across generations: belief, belonging, grief and resilience. Landscape becomes more than a setting; it acts as a keeper of memory, where personal and collective histories continue to echo through the present.
