Michelle McKinnon - Held Not Claimed
Michelle McKinnon, Held Not Claimed, 2026
Oil on canvas, 33x33cm framed
I am an Australian artist based in the rural hills of South Gippsland, Victoria, where the changing seasons and surrounding landscape are central to my practice.
My paintings begin with quiet observation. A branch of gum blossom on the kitchen table, banksia gathered on a walk, or a simple arrangement of familiar objects in soft afternoon light. Living and working in a regional community encourages a slower pace of life and a closer connection to the natural world, qualities that are reflected in both the subjects I choose and the way I paint.
Working primarily in oils, I create contemporary still life paintings featuring Australian native flora. I am drawn to the sculptural forms, intricate textures and muted colours of gum blossom, grevillea, banksia and other seasonal botanicals, celebrating the quiet beauty and resilience of Australia's unique landscape.
Rather than documenting plants botanically, I seek to create paintings that invite contemplation. My hope is that each work offers a moment of stillness, encouraging viewers to pause, look closely, and rediscover the beauty found in the familiar.
