Ruth Byrne - Candlebark
Ruth Byrne, Candlebark, 2025
Ceramic, 20h x 10w cm
Ruth Byrne is a ceramic artist based in Orange, in the Central West of New South Wales. She trained at the ANU School of Art in Canberra. She's known for wheel-thrown, hand-faceted functional pottery, with undulating rims inspired by the hills around Orange. This body of work marks a new direction into carved, sculptural vases.
This work grows out of an exhibition with Jayne Brits after the summer of 2019/2020, when so much of the Australian bush burned. Inspired by burnt out forests, and the strength and beauty that comes back in regeneration. This new body of work carries that further.
The carving traces a burnt trunk's surface — the scarring, the bark stripped back to something raw. Black clay and shino glaze. Some of the surface has come out almost metallic, like trunks that still catch the light after a fire.
I live near Mount Canobolas, home to a Candlebark eucalypt that survives fire by storing dormant buds underground, resprouting once everything above ground is gone.
