Sandra Cooksey-Nott - The Afternoon Glow at Glen Davis
Sandra Cooksey-Nott, The Afternoon Glow at Glen Davis - plein air, 2025
Oil on board, 23×43cm, framed
As a Mudgee-based artist and primary school teacher, I have spent my life immersed in rural landscapes. My practice is grounded in a deep connection to nature, shaped by years of observing the quiet rhythms of country life.
I began by painting animal portraiture, seeking to honour the individuality and spirit of wildlife. More recently, my focus has expanded to the landscape itself, its changing light, atmosphere and sense of place.
Working primarily in oils, I paint both en plein air and in the studio. Painting outdoors allows me to respond instinctively to fleeting shifts in light and colour, capturing the energy and immediacy of the landscape. In the studio, memory and observation come together, creating space to deepen colour, refine composition and explore the emotional resonance of a place.
My work is inspired by the beauty found in moments of transition, the warmth of dusk, the clarity of morning light, and the way colour moves across open country. Through layered oils and expressive mark-making, I aim not to simply depict the landscape, but to evoke its presence: luminous, immersive and alive.
