Sophie Corks is a contemporary artist and mother of two based in Orange, NSW. She grew up mustering sheep on a farm in Boorowa and playing cricket in Wagga Wagga. After years living in Sydney, Paris and Brighton, she returned to Australia wanting to tell the stories of regional life with warmth, colour and a sense of playfulness.
No painting begins with a single reference. Sophie works from hundreds of photographs, sketches, moments from childhood and motherhood, and design details spotted around Australia, layering them together until the painting feels like a moment rather than a place.
Colour is at the core of everything. Using brushes, palette knives, scrapers and cloth, she builds each work slowly, applying paint and pulling it back to reveal the colours beneath, a physical process of accumulation and editing until the surface holds the warmth and texture she's looking for. Her palette choices are deliberate: tone and colour used not simply to describe a scene but to conjure a feeling, the heat of a summer afternoon, the particular light of a place you loved as a child.
Birds appear throughout Sophie's work as quiet carriers of humour and character, the ones who have always lived here and have opinions about it.
Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows and at art fairs across Australia, and is held in private collections nationally and internationally. In 2024 she was a finalist in the Regional Landscape Art Prize, Inside This Box Prize and the Jumbled Art Superstar Awards, following the sell-out success of her 2023 exhibition Town & Country, where all works sold on opening weekend.
