Abby McCarthy lives and works in Newcastle, NSW with her young family. A graduate from the University of Newcastle in Visual Communication, she painted in her spare time whilst building her design practice. Eager to pursue her love of art, she has shifted her focus from design to painting whilst raising her two young boys.
A self taught painter, Abby’s works are a response to her memories of her life built around the coast - past and present. Her paintings depict landscapes shaped by fragments of real and imagined moments. Layers of oil washes, textured marks, and expressive brushstrokes create depth and movement, guiding the viewer through a visual journey. Abby’s use of oils and oil sticks to build a tactile richness, inviting you into a tapestry of memory where time blurs and new details emerge.
My fondest childhood memories are of days spent at the beach, hopping across rockpools, playing in the water, and dancing over rocks. Each visit was unique, shaped by tides that constantly shifted the landscape of water, rocks, and sand.
Years later, I now walk this same coastline with my own children. Watching my boys leap from rock to rock brings a wave of nostalgia, recalling my own adventures. The place feels timeless, yet always changing.
