Esther Schouten finds inspiration in her local landscape in North Warrandyte, Victoria: the shapes of trees, reflections in the Yarra River, quality of light, depth of shadow and atmospheric effects. Esther creates atmospheric, textured and layered oil paintings. She often uses water colour and oil paint to visually explore and express the landscape while capturing her experience of being in it. Some works are inspired by Impressionist painters others are more experimental in nature: examining the boundary between representational and abstract ideas. Recent works are influenced by the golden glow of the morning sun as it slants through the foliage of the bush. Esther also paints portraits and still life compositions and has exhibited with various groups in Melbourne as well as Rotterdam and Hanoi.
There is a magical spot on the Yarra River near where I live. The river itself flows in a 90 degree bend, creating a deep pool where the water swirls and eddies. While standing on a cliff on this bend in the river it is possible to look quite far both up and down stream. Known by locals as Blue Tongue Bend, I have yet to see a Blue Tongue lizard in this spot. What I do see quite often, in the early morning, is Sulphur Crested Cockatoos coming down in family groups to drink. There are always a few circling and calling above. Some mornings before the sun rises, when the sky is tinted pink and yellow the bush takes on different colours: purples and blues. This series of paintings depict the ephemeral colours of an early morning at Blue Tongue Bend.
