Simone Berry is an emerging ceramic artist based on Ku-ring-gai land, Sydney’s leafy north shore. She creates hand-formed, organic, textural and distinctive clay vessels, primarily working with stoneware.
Simone is constantly drawn to her local bushland and coast, as a never-ending source of sensory and textural inspiration. Banksia leaves, seed pods, pitted stones and gnarled tree bark all take form in her work. She invites you to enjoy the precious imperfection of nature within her vessels and to engage with a sensory experience of form, texture and finish.
Following her visual communications degree at the University of South Australia, Simone embarked on a years-long career in graphic design. Longing to bring more tactile creativity back into her life she began creating with clay and fell in love. Today, she continues to refine her practice in her home studio. Her works have been selected as a finalist in the 2023 Little Things Art Prize at St Cloche Gallery in Paddington; featured in Home Beautiful’s annual Australian art issue, January 2025; appeared in Inside Out magazine and Australian House & Garden magazine editions; and invited to exhibit in shows across Sydney.
This body of work takes textural reference from the gnarled trunks of Banksia trees and the spiky woody seed pods of Crow’s Ash trees found in local bushland close to Simone’s studio on Ku-ring-gai land, Sydney’s north shore. These works are a celebration of the beautiful, organic, imperfection of nature. Each piece is a one of a kind work, hand formed and textured in stoneware clay with glaze. Suitable for holding water.
